WEEK 9 : FREE PAINTING
14th & 15th March
Tutor : Siân
WHAT TO BRING
Free painting this week, so please bring along your usual painting materials and anything you are currently working on.
As I have missed a number of Free Painting sessions, if you have completed anything and it is easy to bring it along, I would love to see it.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
“Spring Cannot Be Cancelled” by David Hockney and Martin Gayford.
A change of style from our usual suggestions, this is not a ‘how to’ book, but a book that inspires you to think about art. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like Hockneys finished works, as this book is about an approach to art that you will be able to apply to your own work without too much trouble.
This is an easy read, the sort of book which you dip in and out of. In fact, it is better taken in small chunks, not because it is difficult, but because you will choose to stop and consider what you have just read. Martin Gaylord records conversations he has with David Hockney which are full of inspiration and insights. Somehow between them they entice you to consider art in new ways, to notice things about the way the world is perceived that might have previously slipped past you (see ‘Quote of the Week"‘). If you have considered whether you should read books about art (rather than the ‘how to’s’), this is a good place to start.
THE LITTLE CHALLENGE
Here’s a larger version of this weeks image for you to study in detail. Try to work out how the paint was applied and, if you can, the order it was applied in.
