 KNITS, MORE INFORMATION

When Siân chooses yarns for a pair of Sketching Mitts she has eco-friendliness and sustainability very much in mind.

Over many years of knitting she has acquired a healthy sized stash of oddments of yarns left over for earlier knitting projects. Most have lost their labels. Some leftover balls are big enough to knit a whole pair of mitts. Most are much smaller, but plenty big enough to enhance some mitts with a pretty pattern. Since Siân’s Stash of Yarns has been accumulated over more years than she likes to think, some of the yarns within it were purchased before she became so aware of environmental issues. It would be environmentally irresponsible to simply dispose of these yarns to landfill without first using them. The up-side is that using irreplaceable yarns means that every pair of mittens is genuinely unique!

WOOL

Wool is amazing! The technology behind modern woollen yarns means that it possible to buy yarns that do not itch, are machine washable and can even be tumble dried! The benefits of wool include

  • It is natural, sustainable and renewable.

  • It is an integral part of the carbon cycle, sequestering  carbon form the atmosphere.

  • It is biodegradable, so minimises pollution.

  • it makes warm clothing, even when wet!

  • It retains its shape and doesn’t wrinkle.

  • Responsible producers source wool from farms that meet high standards of animal husbandry.

So wherever possible Siân chooses responsibly produced wool preferably from British producers to reduce transport effects on the environment.

OTHER YARNS

A knitting yarn might include a material other than wool, e.g acrylic or nylon.

YARN WEIGHTS

DK (Double knitting.) Knits up to a comfortable medium weight fabric that is warm and flexible.

CHUNKY : Knits up to make a thick fabric that is warm and cosy, but less pliable that DK. the thicker fabric might make it more difficult to sketch as you may become aware of the ‘bump’.

LACEWEIGHT :  A very delicate and lightweight fabric, perfect for pretty and elegant lacy designs. Very pretty, more suitable for chilly days in spring and late summer.

CARE OF YOUR MITTS

Where more than one yarn is used in a mitten it is best to treat them all as though they are pure wool.. Gently hand wash in cool water. Do not wring. Re-shape while damp. Dry flat. Do not tumble dry.
