Snowdrops and Crocuses
Snowdrops and Crocuses
When snowdrops and crocuses first appear they always raise a smile; they are a clear indication that Spring is on the way!
Fine Art Print
The arrival of snowdrops marks the unmistakable transition into spring. Year after year, I find myself strolling down the lanes of Devon as January draws to a close, eagerly anticipating the sight of those first delicate clusters of snowdrops peeking through the frosty ground. The simple beauty of these tiny white flowers never fails to signal the promise of warmer days ahead, bringing a sense of renewal and hope after the long winter months.
The earliest crocuses are another early spring flower that never fail to make me smile. Each a tiny little pop of colour, they are often found in great swathes, brightening my day and bringing longed for colour in months that are often grey here in England.
Both flowers speak to me of bright, crisp spring days. My paintings of flowers always begin with observational drawings and photographs. Focussing on the flowers I tend to dismiss the fact that in situ smowdrops grow up through last year’s fallen leaves, and crocuses through what is often rather muddy grass . Painting them in their natural setting would not, for me, speak of bright, crisp spring days!
To capture the essence of these delightful flowers I chose to paint them in a sill life setting, enabling me to emphasise their intricate details along with the interplay of colour, light and shadow.
